Baltic-German nobleman in the late Russian Empire, officer in the Amur Cossack Host, Lieutenant-General and commander of the Asiatic Cavalry in the Transbaikal White Army, Governor of Dauria, recipient of the Order of St George and the Order of St Vladimir the Great, scourge of the Bolsheviks, sometime dictator and warlord of Outer Mongolia. Popularly believed amongst his Mongolian subjects to be the incarnation of Jamsaran, the God of War, and the reincarnation of Genghis Khan. Condemned and executed by Cheka firing squad on 15th September, 1921.
